Sold Out on You, starring Ahn Hyo-seop and Chae Won-bin, is a 12-episode K-drama. As this drama has concluded, the initial promise of a breezy rom-com has proven to be more complex—and problematic—than it first appeared.

The Setup

We find Matthew Lee (Ahn Hyo-seop) in the remote Deokpung Village, tending to his farm of white-flowered nuri mushrooms. This mushroom is a miracle ingredient in cosmetics products, but Matthew refuses to entertain a partnership with the cosmetics giant L’Étoile. This is where Dam Ye-jin (Chae Won-bin) enters the story. She is a star shopping host for Home & Shop who has lost her prime-time slot through her refusal to sell inferior cosmetics. A contract with L’Étoile is the only way for her to get back on her feet, which forces her to approach Eric Seo (Kim Bum), an executive director who has his own plans for L’Étoile regarding Matthew Lee.

A Tale of Past and Current Trauma

As the stage is set and the episodes progress, we dive deeper into the characters' backgrounds. Matthew Lee turns out to be a former researcher from the cosmetics company Usu. He created a product called 'Good Morning Cream' that was marketed as a biologically pure product safe for children and babies. However, after its release, the product caused extreme inflammation and severe reactions, sparking a major scandal. The scandal resulted in the suicide of the company's founder and CEO, Choi Woo-su, who was a close friend of Matthew. Overwhelmed by guilt and despair, Matthew faced a psychological collapse, leaving him walking through life like a ghost with no will to live. After ending up in Deokpung Village, he was found by a grandmother who, together with the rest of the village, helped him become a functioning person again, though he was never whole.

Dam Ye-jin's past is marked by the abandonment of her mother, who put her career before her responsibilities, and a never-fulfilled longing for parental love. To make matters worse, Dam Ye-jin and her mother are connected to the 'Good Morning Cream' scandal, having both sold the product as hosts for Home & Shop. This association leaves them both scarred and puts their relationship under even more strain, as her mother believes Dam Ye-jin used the scandal as payback for the abandonment. These deep-seated traumas present themselves in Dam Ye-jin's daily life through an addiction to sleeping medication, which causes severe side effects such as sleepwalking and unconscious, repetitive behaviour.

When Comedy Minimizes Pain

This is where the story falls apart; the writers overlook a crucial boundary: the gravity of profound, dark trauma is absolutely incompatible with comedy. Even if the goal was for these characters to 'heal' each other through their love, the trauma should have received more airtime than just a sideline, and the writers should have concentrated strictly on the romance. Mixing in a love triangle made the story even worse, as the attention shifted away from the two people who were supposed to heal each other. With the decision to underplay these traumas, the series becomes deeply offensive to those who have lived through such experiences.

Authenticity in Acting

The acting of the leads is the only thing that elevates this drama from average to good. Ahn Hyo-seop, known for hits dramas like Abyss, Dr. Romantic, Business Proposal as well as his voice role in the animated blockbuster K-Pop Demon Hunters, has consistently proven his ability to adapt to any role. This drama is no exception; he deeply immerses himself in the character of Matthew Lee, bringing a profound emotional depth that gives his performance incredible credibility and sincerity. In fact, he makes his character so brilliantly human that you eventually forget you are watching a larger-than-life actor. His natural charisma and warm aura make him shine from the very first episode. The most impressive performance is found in episode 11, where his character is discovered by the grandmother, sitting on the ground in the cold, barefoot. The fact that he has no lines and makes almost no movement in this scene makes it even more powerful; his entire appearance tells the story of a man who has completely collapsed mentally.

Chae Won-bin, known for Sweet Home, Doubt, and Who Is She?, gives a fantastic portrayal of a driven, high-energy professional host who is firing on all cylinders. She refuses to sell products without her stamp of approval. The scene in episode 1, where she—as a shopping host—cleans the windows of a skyscraper, is the perfect execution of her character; she manages to be vibrant, knowledgeable, and funny all at the same time. As she puts every ounce of effort into convincing Matthew to work with her, she is totally believable. She also brings significant emotional depth to her character; while she manages the trauma-related scenes well, they resonate slightly less with the viewer when compared to the raw intensity of Ahn Hyo-seop's performance.

Kim Bum, a seasoned actor who most recently starred in Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938, was unfortunately dealt a character that did not allow him to showcase his range. As he has previously proven, he is incredibly skilled at portraying characters with deep emotional complexity; however, in this drama, his background, storyline, and purpose felt underwritten. This ultimately made his character feel more like a distraction than an addition, which left the love triangle falling flat. Furthermore, he was never given the material needed to bring real depth to the constant struggles with his older sister, Michelle.

The Dynamic: From Adversaries to Romance

The “Enemies” Phase: As the leads begin their journey as “enemies”, they deliver a perfect performance of push-and-pull energy; they are clearly in sync, and they elevate each other’s chemistry. It is in these moments of sharp, competitive banter that the two truly shine together.

The Romantic Transition: While their initial transition into romance feels a bit stiff, it improves significantly as the episodes progress. However, having two talented actors does not always guarantee a perfect pairing. It often feels as though Ahn Hyo-seop is doing the “heavy lifting” to maintain the romantic atmosphere, while Chae Won-bin remains more reserved. Because their emotional intensity is not perfectly balanced—with one actor leaning into the romance while the other remains grounded—the duo ultimately lacked that final, elusive spark to make their connection feel truly transcendent.

Visuals and Music

The visuals are impressive throughout the drama, featuring beautiful scenery such as the landscapes of Deokpung Village and the unique aesthetic of the mushroom farm. The ending of episode 12, which features a refreshing credits sequence showing all the actors alongside their character names, is a lovely final touch. However, the music neither stood out nor particularly elevated the drama, leaving the soundtrack firmly in the category of 'average'.

Final Verdict

Sold Out on You is a difficult show to categorise because of the clash between the stellar performances of the leads and the failure of the script. While Ahn Hyo-seop and Chae Won-bin pour their hearts into these roles—often successfully masking the script's problems—they cannot fully distract from the fact that the show fundamentally misunderstands the setup it created. By downplaying profound trauma and mixing it with comedy and unnecessary love triangles, the drama fails to deliver its potential for genuine healing.

Duang with You is a 12-episode Thai series available on iQIYI, starring TeeTee Wanpichit Nimitparkpoom and Por Suppakarn Jirachotikul. Even though it started airing in January, it very much deserves a place here because it is so good.

The Plot & Vibe

Set against a colourful background, this fresh story brings a new BL series to life. Duang (TeeTee) is a happy and enthusiastic art student who has a crush on Quinn and is determined to win him over. Quinn is a popular but icy student from the Faculty of Music who has a habit of turning people down. Duang has no idea how to win Quinn over, so with the help of his best friends—Pae and Jamie—he comes up with countless scenarios. Eventually, Quinn starts to open up toward Duang.

Rising Stars with Undeniable Chemistry

Duang with You marks the first time TeeTee Wanpichit and Por Suppakarn are starring as leads, following their supporting roles in the series Your Sky, but they have certainly hit the ground running. Much of their success stems from how well the characters fit their own personalities. Por, often perceived as the more reserved and introverted of the two, portrays Quinn’s ‘icy’ exterior as the protective defense mechanism it truly is, making his character’s slow transition to openness feel incredibly sincere. Opposite him, TeeTee brings a natural ‘sunshine’ energy that perfectly complements his character.

What makes Duang with You stand out is the genuine connection between the leads; in the series, as well as in real life, they really complement each other, and their chemistry shines on screen.

Performance & Artistic Growth

Although the acting isn’t always completely spot on yet, they both bring depth to their characters. As Quinn’s backstory deals with abuse from his nanny and a lack of parental support, there was room for more complex emotions. But it is worth remembering that both actors are still at the start of their careers and developing the emotional maturity required for such profound trauma. Even so, they pull off the singing, dancing, and intimate moments—along with a wide range of emotions—brilliantly. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing them collaborate on a new project again soon.

Final Verdict

Heartfelt, fun, and undeniably magnetic, Duang with You is a stellar debut for TeeTee and Por. It’s an easy, rewarding watch that captures the magic of a blossoming connection—definitely add this one to your watchlist.

While the people adore his charm and dignity, his life is anything but enviable. He owns nothing, holds no real power, and must constantly hide his true desires to survive the rigid politics of the royal court. More Than Just a Marriage of Convenience

At its heart, Perfect Crown uses the classic strategic alliance—or contract marriage—giving it a fresh twist through the lens of modern ambition and ancient tradition. Seong Hui-ju, a powerhouse in the corporate world, initially clashes with the rigid, tradition-based rules of the palace. Meanwhile, Grand Prince Yi-an, who has never stood up for himself after a lifetime of being taught to simply obey, slowly learns to fight for his own needs with Hui-ju’s guidance. As they shield their partnership—and each other—from those intent on their downfall, a simmering, complex attraction begins to define their bond.

Bringing the Characters to Life

Some critics have dismissed the lead performances, but I find these takes to be a fundamental misreading of the characters. Both Hui-ju and Yi-an are survivors, constantly battling a world that demands their silence and conformity. To survive, they’ve both retreated behind steel walls—what some viewers perceive as arrogance or "stiffness" is, in reality, a deliberate, defensive act of self-protection. Both actors capture the pain of being rejected for who they are, as well as the vulnerability required to emerge from behind those walls for one another. They brought remarkable depth to these roles, navigating a wide emotional range with precision. As the story unfolds, they grow closer, perfectly balancing their chemistry between sweet and intense. They are, simply put, a deeply believable pair.

Final Verdict

Should you watch Perfect Crown? Absolutely. While some reviewers have struggled to connect with the lead characters, I found them instantly likable and profoundly human. So, ignore the bad reviews and go enjoy!

If you’ve ever dismissed a show based on its trailer, only to come back later and be completely won over by its charm, Filing for Love is that exact experience. I almost missed this gem entirely, but I am so glad I gave it a second look. It started quietly in the ratings, but it quickly caught fire—and for good reason.

No Gi-jun (Gong Myoung) is an ace on the internal audit team at Haemu. When he gets a new manager, the fierce Joo In-ah (Shin Hae-sun), he is suddenly transferred to a misconduct unit. When Gi-jun receives an anonymous tip that In-ah is involved in a workplace affair, he sees it as the perfect opportunity for revenge—only to find himself drawn to her instead.

From Rivals to Partners

Even though “enemies to lovers” is not a new trope, this drama brings a distinctive and refreshing story to it. After the initial clash between the leads, they slowly move to seeing each other in a new light. When they start forming a connection, which catches them both off guard, they can't escape the magnetic pull between them. As the episodes progress, the leads get more and more in sync, both at and outside work, leading to an ace duo dynamic. The natural way they balance their growing attraction with genuine vulnerability is what elevates this story and makes you want to keep watching.

The Performance

The actors make this drama! I honestly don’t think anyone could have played these roles better, which is a massive credit to the director, Lee Soo-hyun.

Gong Myoung gives an amazing performance; he immediately connects with the audience as a calm, reliable, and warm-hearted man. When he is forced to switch teams, he is equally convincing as an irritated, upset, and sceptical corporate auditor. Shin Hae-sun’s acting is fantastic, and she plays the bold, fierce, and direct manager to a T. You know from the get-go that she is not someone to be messed with, but as the story develops, you start to see a deeper side of her.

The best thing about this show is the sincerity and depth of their connection; both actors bring a chemistry that is breathtaking and absolutely on fire.

Final Verdict

As the title suggests, this is an absolute must-watch. If you are looking for a show that balances sharp, professional tension with a truly heartfelt romance, Filing for Love hits every single mark. The quality of storytelling and the undeniable chemistry between its leads makes this a top drama. Trust me—you don’t want to miss this one.

Recently added to Netflix, the new K-drama The Wonderfools is an exceptionally well crafted, 8-episode limited series. It delivers a perfect combination of comedy, action and adventure.

The story transports us back to the year 1999. While the world is gripped by doomsday panic and fearing a literal apocalypse on December 31st, we meet Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun-bin), a unique, unpredictable young woman living with her grandmother. Lacking a formal education, she struggles to find a steady job, and her physical health is anything but good. Her long-held dream is to travel around the world before time runs out. To accomplish this plan, she cooks up a wild scheme that requires the help of her neighbours: Son Gyeong-hun (Choi Dae-hoon) and Kang Ro-bin (Im Seong-jae).

However, when the plan goes completely south, an unexpected incident grants the trio superpowers. Suddenly, these three ordinary misfits have to figure out how to control their abilities while uncovering the mystery of why this happened to them. To survive the fallout, they are forced to rely on Lee Un-jeong (Cha Eun-woo), a civil servant who has his own mysterious past and is very reluctant to get involved with the chaotic trio.

Flipping the Superhero Formula

What makes this drama uniquely compelling is its different spin on the superhero genre. I have seen a lot of superheroes movies and series based on Marvel and DC Comics. However, The Wonderfools stands apart by featuring unlikely heroes who struggle to understand and control their powers. The writers, Heo Da-joong and Kang Eun-kyung, took a very familiar global theme and truly made it their own.

This drama makes all genres work beautifully together, and that is not an easy accomplishment. Even though adventure, action, comedy, and a background of trauma are mixed together, they complement each other instead of being distasteful, which I have seen before in other dramas. The most important key aspect here is that the comedy is never the goal; it just happens naturally while all the characters are doing their best to stabilise the mess they are in and gain control over their powers. The script is exceptionally well-put together, following a logical, steady-paced, and deeply character-driven structure that kept me engaged from episode one until I ended up binge-watching the entire series.

The Secret of the Wunderkinder

As we learn more about the mysterious past of Lee Un-jeong, we also find the connection to why Chae-ni, Gyeong-hun, and Ro-bin have these newfound powers: The Wunderkinder experiments.

The focus of these experiments was on immortality and eternal life, which ultimately ended up creating a “Child of Eternity.” Unfortunately, they lost this child. Now, back for round two, the main researcher is giving it another go, but this time with a much bigger scope. During their search for the truth, Chae-ni learns she is at the centre of this experiment and even has a part of it hidden in her own body.

An Amazing Cast

The absolute heart of this series’ rests on its fantastic ensemble cast, featuring a great interaction between the actors resulting in elevated performances.

As someone who has closely followed Cha Eun-woo’s filmography through projects like Island, Island 2, A Good Day to Be a Dog, and Wonderful World, I came into this series with high expectations—and he totally rose above them. Stepping into the shoes of Lee Un-jeong, he manages to very convincingly play the reluctant leader. He beautifully portrays the internal struggle of a man torn between staying hidden to escape his history and getting sucked in to help this group of new heroes. More than anything, the viewer can truly feel the deep pain of his traumatic past. His acting here is brilliant; no matter what emotion his character is experiencing, Eun-woo makes sure you are right there with him.

Park Eun-bin—famed for powerhouse dramas like Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Hyper Knife—gives her character, Eun Chae-ni, the perfect out-of-control, train-wreck personality. Yet, at the exact same time, she beautifully balances that chaos by showing Chae-ni’s kind and sensitive side. As her character is the most fiercely determined to act as a hero, she brought a brilliant “go-getter” mindset to her performance.

Her shock, guilt, and despair were entirely felt in her performance as her character makes the dark connection to the Wunderkinder experiments and discovers the truth behind her grandmother’s past. She performed the role fantastically.

The chemistry between Cha Eun-woo and Park Eun-bin is amazing to watch. As this drama is tagged as an action, comedy, and fantasy first, the romance had a smaller part to play. However, even though it was small, it was exceptionally good. They go from not knowing or trusting each other to slightly opening up more as the episodes progress. Finally, they reach a full protection mode for the one they love. This is beautifully shown in episode 7, with Lee Un-jeong fighting to save Eun Chae-ni, while she in turn is the only one who can calm him down during his power overload. This protective bond deepens even further in episode 8, carrying their emotional connection right through to the finale. As you see all this happening on your screen, their emotions truly radiate and the actors’ performances shine.

Choi Dae-hoon and Im Seong-jae masterfully complete the core team. They both did a great job of playing unlikely heroes struggling to control their powers and find their own internal courage. Next to Park Eun-bin, they both brought the highest amount of natural, effortless comedy to their respective roles.

And, as always, the legendary Kim Hae-sook—whom I have seen in so many dramas I truly cannot name them all—gives another stunning performance as Kim Jeon-bok, Chae-ni’s grandmother. Kim Hae-sook plays the role of a woman trying to right her past wrongs perfectly. She brings a beautiful sense of remorse to the screen alongside a determination to stop this from ever happening again. In this goal, she is helped by an escaped Wunderkind.

The supporting cast, alongside the guest stars, provided the perfect finishing touch to the drama. While I cannot name every single one of them, they are all good.

Visuals and Music

The director, Yoo In-sik, made brilliant use of camera angles, lighting, and scenery throughout the series. This creative vision shines brightest during the major fight scenes, where the camera placement perfectly keeps Eun Chae-ni at the absolute centre of the action, emphasising her perspective amidst the chaos.

The choices were equally impressive when it came to the music, which was beautifully used to underwrite the emotional weight of the scenes. Having Radiohead’s iconic track “Creep” start off the very first episode—and then deploying it later during a high-stakes, major fight scene—was an absolute stroke of genius. It fits the lonely, misfit identity of these characters perfectly.

My final advice is simple: definitely watch it!

Romance, Comedy, and Trauma

Netflix markets this show—both in its byline and its promotional trailers—with a heavy emphasis on comedy and a love triangle. However, as we learn more about the backstories of the leads, it becomes clear that both are hiding heavy psychological trauma. This trauma has woven itself into their everyday lives; in the case of Ye-jin, it even threatens her safety.

While comedy mixed with trauma can succeed in rare cases, it mostly succeeds when comedy is not the primary goal. Here, the comedy clashes with the weight of the trauma and the seriousness of the danger. The leads also take a while to find their rhythm, though their chemistry improves significantly as the episodes progress.

The Performances

The acting of the leads in this series is its greatest strength. Ahn Hyo-seop gives a brilliant performance as he transitions from a man who is guarded and cold to one who is vulnerable and warm. Beyond his complete skill set for portraying any emotion, he brings an inherent sincerity to the role; it is clear he put a great deal of effort into making this character feel like a real person.

Chae Won-bin balances the two sides of her character perfectly: the obsessive, high-functioning professional and the woman hiding a crumbling mental state. Portraying this duality with such depth is no easy task, yet she remains entirely believable throughout.

Unfortunately, Kim Bum does not shine as brightly as he could have. This is largely because his character was not thought out well; he is left with little room to navigate, and the role itself feels rushed rather than fully realized.

Final Verdict

Sold Out on You is more than a romantic comedy; the characters’ traumatic backgrounds run like a red line through the entire series. If you can overlook the hit-and-miss balance between the comedy and the trauma, it remains a good watch for the great acting skills of the leads.

I watched Dear X a while back, but didn’t write a review at the time. However, lately I have seen more than a few bad reviews, and so I wanted to write my perspective on this.

I feel like a lot of the online criticism confuses the actors with their characters, or they are hating the story simply because they don’t fully understand how these specific personalities are supposed to behave. This isn’t your typical K-drama where characters learn lessons and act perfectly healthy. It’s an unfiltered look at toxic relationships and real psychological manipulation. If you watch it to understand why these broken people act the way they do, the script is brilliant.

Is this a dark, twisted, violent, and cruel story with complex characters and deep emotional scars? Yes! Obviously! The story centres around a sociopath and her two enablers (one of whom later grows a conscience).

The Psychology (The Characters)

Baek Ah-jin (The Sociopath)

Ah-jin represents a highly accurate portrayal of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD), an actual clinical diagnosis found in the DSM. Her character is law-breaking, deceitful, manipulative, aggressive, holds zero regard for the safety of others, and feels absolutely no remorse for the pain she inflicts. These are not flaws in the script—they are the literal diagnostic traits of ASPD.

Kim Jae-oh (Enabler 1)

Jae-oh grew up in a profoundly broken, violent, and abusive environment. Because of his tragic past, he felt entirely worthless, discarded, and invisible to the rest of the world. When he meets Ah-jin, she is the first person to ever tell him that he is “useful.” This recognition becomes his lifeline, transforming him into her absolute protector. His behaviour is a textbook example of extreme codependency; he is willing to kill or die for her because, in his mind, his own life had no value in the first place without her.

Yoon Jun-seo (Enabler 2)

Jun-seo is Ah-jin’s childhood stepbrother. As a kid, he witnessed the horrific abuse and emotional neglect his own mother inflicted on Ah-jin. Burdened by an overwhelming sense of generational guilt, he swore to protect her and cover her tracks. His entire motivation for enabling her is rooted in this deep-seated guilt and a severe trauma bond. Just like Jae-oh, his mind is trapped in extreme codependency; he deludes himself into believing that if he just shows her enough unconditional love and patience, he can “save” her from her own darkness.

As you can see, none of these characters are emotionally healthy or stable, and their backstories provide clear evidence as to why. The drama is a brilliant, spot-on portrayal of these exact psychological distortions. I haven’t read the webtoon, so I don’t know how faithful it is to the source material. I know the ending is controversial and differs from the comic, but I found the drama’s conclusion highly realistic. Even if it isn’t a “happy” or satisfying ending, the real world isn’t fair either, and the finale reflects that grim reality perfectly.

The Execution (The Acting)

The acting across the board is incredible and elevates the entire production.

Kim Yoo-jung (as Baek Ah-jin):

Her portrayal of a sociopath is brilliant precisely because she strips away normal human warmth. She captures the manipulative, deceitful, and vindictive nature of a character with a total lack of empathy perfectly. You can actually feel the chill through the screen because she doesn’t try to soften Ah-jin to make her likeable. She masterfully portrays the “mask of sanity,” showing how easily Ah-jin makes the world believe she is innocent, which makes it even harder for her victims to come forward.

Kim Do-hoon (as Kim Jae-oh):

He is terrifyingly believable in his blind devotion to Ah-jin. As a viewer, you completely buy into the fact that she is the only anchor keeping him tethered to this world. The actor makes that desperate, obsessive need to protect her shine through every scene.

Kim Young-dae (as Yoon Jun-seo):

Playing the person who stood by and witnessed years of horrific abuse is a heavy task, and you can practically feel the mountains of guilt radiating from his character. He perfectly captures the desperate urge to rescue her, followed by the heartbreaking, agonizing realization that she is beyond saving. You are right there with him through his despair, leading up to his final acceptance when he chooses to turn against her.

Kim Yoo-jung, Kim Do-hoon, and Kim Young-dae bring these deeply layered characters to life fantastically.

Final Verdict

Dear X is a psychological masterpiece of trauma and manipulation. If you understand the clinical definition of a sociopath and the trauma-driven personalities of her enablers, you will appreciate how brilliantly written this show actually is. If you enjoy darker, psychological series, this is an absolute must-watch.

However, please note that if you are highly triggered by themes of severe abuse or suicide, it may be best to skip this one.
